Doulas - Research

A review of data from the Cochrane Collaboration Pregnancy and Childbirth Group showed clear evidence for the effectiveness of doulas in creating positive birth outcomes.

Having a doula as part of your birth team cannot guarantee any particular outcomes however the research does indicate that women who have this support experience;

  • fewer medical interventions
  • shorter labours
  • less instances of vacuum/forcep delivery
  • reduced need for augmentation
  • less analgesic use
  • fewer cesarean births
  • report more positive birth experiences
